Coast Inc's Corner Chat: Abbi Boyd

Updated: Jun 27

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Abbi from Coast Inc.’s recruiting team to get a deeper understanding of her experience with the company. In this interview, she shares her career experience, what it’s like to work at Coast Inc., and some valuable advice for future candidates. Read on to learn how Coast Inc. supports its team, fosters personal and professional growth, and creates a vibrant, people-focused environment.

Q: How did you hear about Coast Inc?

A:  I heard about Coast Inc. when I was still living in Ypsilanti, Michigan for college. I had just graduated in April 2020 during the pandemic. My plans changed drastically when I lost my serving job and had to reconsider my future. My then-boyfriend, now husband, was moving to Chicago, so I decided to move there too and started applying for jobs in the area.

I found the position at Coast Inc. on LinkedIn and I definitely felt the uncertainty and self-doubt from so much change and a global lockdown, but  I knew I had a good work ethic and could talk to people. The main challenge for me stepping into a new role was trusting myself to make these big changes all at once.

What attracted me to Coast Inc. was the opportunity to use my experience in building relationships and my strong work ethic. In my previous jobs, like working in restaurants and retail, I didn't see much growth opportunity long term. At Coast Inc., I felt I could truly grow and build a fulfilling life, knowing that my efforts would lead to meaningful progress.

Q: What is it like to work with Coast Inc?

A:  When I first started working at Coast Inc., a few things stood out to me. Everyone was genuinely there to help. It was a stressful time in my life, moving to a new city and starting my career. Despite the overwhelming changes, there were at least three or four people I could call, grab dinner with, or just talk to. This support was crucial in helping me build connections in a place where I knew almost no one. It made a huge difference not just in the start of my career but in my life overall.

Beyond the initial support, the ongoing care for my professional and personal development is something I really value. If I'm slacking in an area or need to be held accountable, there are people who will do that. But if I'm struggling or need to vent about something, I can do that too. This balance is a big part of the culture at Coast Inc. We have big goals and work hard, but at the end of the day, everyone is treated as a person who is genuinely cared about.

Q: How has Coast Inc. helped you achieve your goals?

A:  Two major ways Coast Inc. has helped me achieve my goals are by improving my self-awareness, and by enhancing my time management skills.

Firstly, I used to be very emotionally reactive and easily overwhelmed. Like many people, I struggled with anxiety, especially when faced with new challenges. At Coast Inc., I've learned to be more solution-oriented, which has helped me manage challenges better. I'm also learning how to take better care of myself mentally, so I can show up and be present, professionally and personally. This has improved my relationships and how I show up for important things outside of work.

Secondly, my time management skills have significantly improved. Before joining Coast Inc. I didn’t have a clear schedule. I was always busy and often felt scattered, always trying to be everywhere at once. Now, I've learned to be more intentional with my planning. While it's a continuous learning process as life changes and I have new responsibilities, I’ve made substantial progress in this area.

Q: What does working at Coast Inc. mean to you?

A:  If I had to describe working at Coast Inc. in one word, it would be "impact!" We have a community focused on making a difference in others' lives. Whether it's supporting teammates, helping them achieve their goals, or the impact others have on me, it's all about growth and development. We also make a significant impact on our clients and their businesses, helping them grow. It's really cool to be part of a company where making a big impact is at the core of everything we do.

Q: How does Coast fit your personality?

A: Coast Inc. fits my personality perfectly because I'm a people person. I'm energized and outgoing, and this job keeps that energy alive. I could never work a job that involves plugging away at numbers all day or even doing Zoom calls all the time.  I love being on a dynamic team that allows me to engage with interesting people every day. I thrive on interaction and engagement, and Coast's people-focused environment is exactly what I need to be at my best.

Q: What advice would you give to candidates?

A: My advice to candidates is simple: why not? Honestly, why not go for it? If your goals align with what Coast Inc. offers, what's stopping you? We often overthink what we can and can't do, trying to fit into someone else's mold. If you're on the fence, ask yourself: what's holding you back? What do you want out of life, and is this a good path to get you there? Remember, there's no one perfect path; just find the one that works for you.

Growing up in a small town in Michigan with limited resources, Abbi always knew she wanted more from life. From excelling in athletics and academics to working multiple jobs to fund her education and experiences, her journey showcases a relentless drive and determination.

Describing her personality as "the human form of a shot of espresso," Abbi embodies the energy and enthusiasm she brings to her role at Coast Inc. She is a prime example of how being true to oneself and pursuing one’s goals with vigor can lead to personal and professional fulfillment.
